Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
MHow can I get into the Special Effects business, or the Fireworks Display business? Will you hire me?
We try to buy standard products from our manufacturers
whenever possible to keep costs down. We only make special items
we cannot buy. So, sorry,
we do not sell materials.
Ä Pyrotechnics is a field that includes fireworks, special effects, and other functions or devices based on fire, combustion, or explosives. Proximate refers to the audience. Proximate Pyrotechnics is a newly developed form of fireworks that can be used much closer to the audience than regular fireworks, as close as 15 - 50 feet away. They also can be made to have little or no smoke, making them suitable for indoor use. They can be anything from a simple "flash" on a stage to a complete miniature fireworks display shot inside a domed stadium or mall. We can provide full-blown fireworks displays in places you'd never think were possible.

We do a lot of pyro, but are also known for our mechanical, light, flame,
and atmospheric effects. See some of our reviews.
It all depends on the effect, but many times a properly informed and prepared
performer can run under a waterfall, etc.
ÄAll performers and all other personnel that will be in the vicinity of the effects must sign either a release and hold harmless agreement, or must simply acknowledge the receipt of a warning from us to stay away from the effects.
Why? We will do our job to operate
the effects safely and to inform everyone how to be safe around them, and
if we fail in that then we are responsible. But if a performer decides
to sit on top of a burning fountain despite clear warnings not to, we just
can't be held responsible. No one is forced to sign the release,
but they will be prohibited from being anywhere near the effects if they
Ä We current offer pyrotechnic services in most counties and cities in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky. We can do non-pyrotechnic effects anywhere in the USA.
Ä For a single performance concert, it basically costs about $500 for us to generate the necessary paperwork, order materials, create the required floor plan for the effects, obtain local permits, obtain or verify insurance, work with your Stage Designer, and have our crew on-site for the day. With materials the cost can run from about $600 to as much as you want to spend -- $1000 - $4000 is a typical range. A "quickie" assignment with a single effect and little setup time can be done for even less. Ask us! (Insurance is not included in these prices)
Concerts or plays with multiple shows -- lets us quote you the cost.
We do a lot of community service work --
if you are a local school, community theater, etc., contact us for a special,
Ä Many times the "event" insurance policy will cover special effects. This is the lowest cost route.
If it doesn't, or a proper certificate cannot be obtained in time for permit application, etc., Prox Pyro can often supply Pyrotechnic insurance for most venues but the cost is extremely high these days. To meet Ohio's minimum will cost at least $3,000 just for the insurance.
We have no sources for Flame Effects
insurance. This will have to be supplied as part of some venue or
production policy. Outside of Ohio, no insurance or paperwork
is normally required for Flame Effects as few other states have adopted
here for more information.
Ä We currently offer indoor and outdoor effects for productions, plays, concerts, special events, film, video, theme parks, etc.
All manually operated effects are performed and monitored by a trained and licensed operator. We do not sell or rent any manually operated equipment.
We do design and sell completely automatic
"turnkey" effects that are designed to be operated by untrained individuals
or for automated use.
Yes, we are proud to hold license #1 (59-57-0001).
I wish I knew.J Seriously,
I can't give you an answer. Sometimes the opportunity must just present
itself. You can find a large organization and hire on doing grunt-work
for a few years, work your way up, but even that type of opportunity is
rare. The movie FX business is dying with the plummeting cost of
CGI, but live performance effects are increasing in demand.
Ä Legal and insurance restrictions make this impossible unless we truly have first hand knowledge of your abilities and have personally observed your work and judgment on many occasions over many years.
